Mahaska Drug Haunted Attic Ghost Rescue Center

The Mahaska Drug Haunted Attic Ghost Rescue Center will run throughout the entire month of October, from October 1–31. A different 3D-printed ghost character will be featured each day, with every ghost having its own name, personality, story, and theme. The idea behind the event is that the ghosts have escaped from Mahaska Drug’s “Haunted Attic,” and throughout the month customers will be helping rescue them one at a time.

Each morning, Mahaska Drug will reveal the Ghost of the Day on social media. The daily post will introduce that ghost, show what it was caught doing or where it had been hiding around the store, and give customers a chance to come in and rescue that character. The ghosts will not actually be hidden for customers to search for; once the daily ghost has been “found,” it will be available at the front of the store for customers who would like to take one home.

Customers will also be encouraged to follow along and collect the ghosts throughout the month. Each ghost will have its own collectible-style information and personality, helping the event feel like an ongoing Halloween story rather than just a daily product release. Customers can also pick up a Haunted Attic Log Book to keep track of the ghosts they rescue and record fun details about each character.

There will be special weekly ghosts tied to the event as well. Customers who collect all seven daily ghosts from a particular week will have the opportunity to receive that week’s exclusive ghost. At the end of October, customers who complete the full month and collect all 31 daily ghosts will also qualify for a special final or grand-prize ghost.

The event is designed to be interactive both in-store and online. Social media will be used every day to continue the Haunted Attic storyline, introduce each new ghost, show photos or short videos of the ghosts causing mischief around Mahaska Drug, and encourage customers to stop in throughout the month. The goal is to create a fun, collectible Halloween experience that gives customers a reason to follow along and visit Mahaska Drug repeatedly during October.

Additional details about how customers can rescue each ghost, pricing, purchase requirements, weekly rewards, and the final collection prize will be shared separately as the event gets closer.

The Ghosts will be purchasable ($3 on the day it is revealed, $5 if you want one after it has been revealed, and Free with any $10 purchase at Mahaska Drug)

Book Signing with Author Jamie Hulker of "Esteemed" and "Entrusted"

Have you ever wondered what the Bible actually says about women—and what their accounts reveal about God and His heart toward them... and toward you?

You'll find those answers in the brand-new narrative Entrusted: Women in God's Redemptive Plan or the newly revised, award-winning Bible study Esteemed: God and His View of Women.

For generations, women in the Bible have been overlooked, misunderstood, or disconnected from the larger biblical narrative. But what if these accounts are far more central to what God was accomplishing than we've ever considered?

Drawing on years of study, teaching, and research, and deeply rooted in Scripture, both resources trace the accounts of women from Genesis to the early church. In that process, they reveal a vital truth: God entrusts women with significant roles in His redemptive plan—and He always has.

Whether you choose the narrative journey of Entrusted or the in-depth Bible study Esteemed, you'll come away with a deeper appreciation for the God who profoundly loves and purposefully includes women—and the confidence that He always will.

Growing Native Plants from Seed

Are you interested in adding native plants to your garden while saving money? Why not try growing your own native plants? Late fall is actually the time to start! Dan Sears, Iowa Prairie Network vice president, will present on growing your own natives from seed.  He'll bring free samples of beginner-friendly native plant seeds to help you bring nature home.  The presentation is hosted by the Mahaska County Master Gardeners and will be held Saturday October 3 at 10 am at the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach – Mahaska County office (212 North I Street, Oskaloosa).

The Iowa Prairie Network (IPN) is a grass roots, volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  It was formed in 1990 and is dedicated to the preservation of Iowa's prairie heritage.  Now, less than 0.01% of Iowa's remnant prairie remains, highlighting the need for education and conservation.  IPN brings together interested individuals, organizations, and government agencies to locate, protect, and restore what remains of our prairie heritage before it disappears forever.

This presentation is open to the public for anyone wishing to learn about the topic, both adults and youth.  There is no fee to attend due to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach–Mahaska County and Mahaska County Master Gardener support.   Registration is not required but appreciated.

To register, or for additional information about horticulture programming please contact Suzette Striegel, Mahaska County Extension Horticulture and Education Program Coordinator at the Mahaska County Extension office 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa, by phone 641-673-5841 or email striegel@iastate.edu  or https://www.extension.iastate.edu/mahaska

Shop The Alley

Book Signing with Author Ginny Graham

GINNY GRAHAM, Author of The Three Widow Series, presents Book 2: Mustard Seed Faith that Moves Mountains.

Nurse Marjorie Malone inherits a struggling machine shop that needs more than a defibrillator to survive. She knows hospital protocols and predictable chaos--not the messy world of CNC milling, bleeding budgets, and employee drama. Her plan is simple: get Malone Manufacturing ready for sale and return to the safety of eight-hour shifts.

But Malone Manufacturing's noisy, spark-filled world and its people complicates everything. Loyal Darren. Difficult Ted. Steady Paul.

If you enjoy stories of resilient women and authentic faith woven naturally into everyday life, and the redemptive beauty of community, I think you'll love walking alongside Marjorie and her "Soul Sisters" Angela (Wisteria) and Caroline (Trillium).

Ginny Graham draws from her experience in the business world.

She pours her hard-won lessons into the story of a widow plunged into a world she'd never planned.

Book signing w/ Lydia Grace Kaiser

Kaiser was raised Baptist and graduated from a conservative Bible college in 1988. She still considers herself conservative and staunchly defends "the inerrancy of the Bible in the original languages." After attending seminary and learning about the challenges of translation, Kaiser began to notice inconsistencies within various English versions and realized translators make choices based on ideology, especially in the case of gender. She began to study the history of the translations of those passages.

In the last year, two large denominations (Southern Baptist Convention and Presbyterian Church of America) have taken steps to further restrict women from not only the title of "pastor" but from "pastoral function." Kaiser believes the time is right to help lay people understand the history and reasons for so much misunderstanding on this topic.
