Knee-High Naturalists "Wolly Mammoths"

Bring your children ages 5 and younger out to the Environmental Learning Center on Wednesday, November 6 from 9-10 am for the monthly Knee-High Naturalist program. This FREE program is designed to help foster learning about nature and exploring the outdoors. We ask that adults bringing children remain with them during the program.

On November 6th, the program is titled "Woolly Mammoths". Kids will learn about woolly mammoth that once roamed the area. We will visit a life-sized skeleton, investigate real mammoth bones, and listen to a story.

Private Well Stewardship Program

Keeping Your Private Well Water Safe A new learning opportunity from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach

 The Mahaska and Poweshiek County Extension offices will host a free, one-hour learning session for private well owners on Thursday, November 7. The program will help attendees understand their well’s water quality and connect them to resources to manage their well.

Did you know that Iowa has a unique funding source for free or low-cost annual testing of private wells? Or that some water pollutants are odorless, tasteless and will not be removed by boiling water? If you’re curious about the answers to these questions, then take advantage of the upcoming learning session which will detail how to test your well and who can help, common contaminants, and factors that affect well water quality.

The program will be taught by Catherine DeLong, Water Quality Program Manager for ISU Extension and Outreach. According to DeLong, “About 230,000 Iowans rely on private wells as their home’s main water source, yet many do not know they should be testing once a year and that Iowa has a unique funding source to help cover the cost of testing.”

NAMI Family Support Group

NAMI Family Support Group is for any adult with a loved one who has experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. This group meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month from 5 p.m.- 6 p.m. via Zoom and in person at the Optimae Building (209 E. Maple St) in Centerville. "March of the Penguins" at the ELC

Come out the Environmental Learning Center to watch March of the Penguins in the Discovery Lab. This film is a documentary documentary film (FREE for all ages) about the yearly journey of the emperor penguins in Antarctica. Learn about their breeding, courtship, survival, and challenges in the harsh environment. Some refreshments will be provided, but feel free to bring your own!

Birdhouse Gourd Workshop

Join the Mahaska Gardners for a Birdhouse Goud Workshop for 4-Hers and the public. Mahaska Gardners will cover growing gourds, and birdhouse construction with tips and growing, construction, and use. 

While supplies last, participants will receive a gourd to make into a birdhouse. 

Not all steps of construction will be completed at the workshop.

November's Painting at Smokey Row

Every month we travel to Smokey Row on the third Thursday to bring a fun painting event to the Oskaloosa area! Please join us for November's on the 21st. 
For the month of November, we’ll be creating this gorgeous fall piece reminiscent of Thanksgiving on the farm. Pair this with a yummy drink and you’ve got a perfect evening.

Each ticket is just 30$ a piece and the event starts at 6 pm. There are 2 ways to register/pay:
1. Venmo 30$ to That Paint & Pottery Place instructor: @Dora-Olson-2
2. Register at Smokey Row by filling out the sign up sheet and paying at the register with 30$ cash or check made out to That Paint & Pottery Place. (They have a special drop box just for payment for the paint classes behind the counter)

Tassel Ridge Winery 2024 Iowa Nouveau Release

11:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m.

Nouveau is traditionally released on the third Thursday of November. Take a taste of the Tassel Ridge® 2024 Iowa Nouveau and then enjoy a glass of 2024 Iowa Nouveau ($7) with one of our Bistro Lunch items or something from our All-day Menu. The Tasting Bar will not be open, but Seated Tastings, also by Reservation only, will be available. Our Seated Tastings include your choice of one of eight Tasting Flights. Flights include five wines, freshly baked bread, Frisian Farms Young Gouda, and Tassel Ridge Dipping Oil. Price $15 per flight.

Join us as we magically Turn on the Lights around the town square at 6:00 p.m. sharp!

FREE Labyrinth Reunion Concert - One Night Only!

The 1970s and '80s rock band Labyrinth is celebrating their induction into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a FREE Reunion Concert at the George Daily Auditorium in Oskaloosa! The concert will include an opening band and Labyrinth performing their original music and some covers of their favorite hits of the '70s and '80s.

Tickets are free and general admission, but you can reserve your seat at www.georgedaily.org.

The band was formed in 1979 while many members attended Central College, including Chris Hopkins '82, Jeff Knight '84, Doug McCaulley '83, Matt Bell '81, Craig Jones '80, John Smalley '78, and Ralph Johnson '80. Band members who toured while they were making music full-time were Hopkins, Knight, McCaulley, Chris Scavo, Danny Cash, Brian Waterman, and Dave Jacobson.

Between 1979 and 1986, Labyrinth performed throughout the Midwest, the Great Plains, and west through Montana and Idaho, as well as Ontario, Canada. In 1985, they recorded a full-length LP, "So Wild," still available to stream on Bandcamp.

While the band was active, they performed with many national acts, including Foghat, Steppenwolf, Black Oak Arkansas, Guess Who, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Head East, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Savoy Brown, Steele Breeze, Shooting Star, The Jesse Ventura Band, and King Kobra.

NAMI Family Support Group is for any adult with a loved one who has experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. This group meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month from 5 p.m.- 6 p.m. via Zoom and in person at the Optimae Building (209 E. Maple St) in Centerville.
