It’s April Fools Day at the Elmhurst Grille (formerly the Wood Iron Grille) in Oskaloosa for our next painting event there! This month we had a specific request for a rooster piece and we ain’t foolin’ with this beauty! This piece has such a rustic country feel, but that rooster really brings the color!!

Knee-High Naturalists "Fishy Fun"

Bring your children ages 5 and younger out to the Environmental Learning Center on Wednesday, April 2 from 9-10 am for the monthly Knee-High Naturalist program. This FREE program is designed to help foster learning about nature and exploring the outdoors. We ask that adults bringing children remain with them during the program.

On April 2nd, the activity is titled "Fishy Fun". Kids will learn fun facts about fish that live in ponds and lakes. We will have a story time, fish craft, and feed fish in the aquarium.

This class is geared toward elementary students. Completely hands-on, students will explore different mediums and art-making techniques while traveling through the history of art and artists.

For students 6-12 years old.

Join us at Mahaska County Conservation's monthly "Coffee Club at the ELC" on Friday, April 4 from 9:00-10:00 am. We meet upstairs in the Discovery Lab and have homemade refreshments served along with freshly brewed coffee.

This class introduces secondary homeschool students to a variety of 3-D techniques that serve as building blocks for a solid foundation in art making. As skills are acquired and improved upon, students will learn to think independently and solve problems creatively.

For students 13-18 years old. 

13 class sessions. Fridays 11:30am-1:30pm, January 10 to April 11, no class March 14. 

$150 registration required.

A special opportunity for littles to get their hands messy, Preschool Art Time is all about Process Art. It’s all about the experience of making. Investigating materials and mediums for creating rather than a focus on the end product.

Leighton Lions Club Spring Pancake Breakfast

Serving pancakes, sausages, eggs and choice of beverage. Freewill donations accepted. This event benefits Leighton resident David Whatling, owner of Dave's Pro Auto repair in Leighton. He sustained a severe viral and bacterial eye infection last year in his remaining eye. Dave has been blind in one eye for most of his life. The infection damaged the cornea requiring numerous treatments at the Univ. of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City to save his vision which has resulted in modest recovery. Proceeds of this event go towards helping cover required hospital visit travel expenses and out of pocket medical costs not covered by insurance or Medicare.

Book Signing with International Speaker, Pastor and Author Jay Scribner

Jay Scribner, along with his wife Kay, are natives of Illinois, but they have made their home in Branson, Missouri since 1977. Jay is the former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Branson where he served for 28 years, enjoying the favor and fruitfulness of the Lord.
This wonderful Church experienced excellent growth, evangelistic outreach, extensive mission development, debt-free building projects, and impacted the local community and beyond with the transforming gospel of Jesus Christ, under Jay’s leadership.
Jay has an Associate’s degree from Hannibal Lagrange College in Hannibal, Missouri, a Bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma, a Master’s degree from Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He also has an Honorary Doctorate from Hannibal Lagrange University.Jay has travelled extensively in 20 countries; in several countries multiple times. He has served in various capacities within the Missouri Baptist and Southern Baptist Conventions, including President of the Missouri Baptist Convention. He and his wife founded the first Christian radio station, KLFC, in the Branson community. He has led in over 200 revivals, served as an adjunct professor in college and seminary, as well as being a sought-after speaker for banquets, seminars, etc. He also served as Guest Chaplain at the United States Congress in Washington in 1997.
Kay is also an author of two women’s Bible study books. Jay and Kay have two grown sons, Paul and Mark. They and their wives are the parents of Jay and Kay’s eight grandchildren.

Join us at the Environmental Learning Center, 2342 Hwy 92, on April 11 for an engaging and inspiring presentation titled “Creating Buzz: The Joy, Ease, and
Challenge of Supporting Pollinators” with Jamie Beyer, Lifetime Master Gardener and President of the Central Iowa Beekeepers Association. Beyer is also a recipient of the Spencer Award from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, recognizing his dedication to conservation and sustainable agriculture.

Mahaska County Conservation invites homeschool and online school families to the monthly Homeschool Science Lab on Wednesday, April 16 from 10:00-11:00 am at the Quercus Wilderness Area.

The topic for April is "Spring Season Nature Hike". Kids will explore the area with the naturalist and look for and identify signs of spring. Please dress for the weather. Quercus Wilderness Area is located at 3139 Kent Ave., Oskaloosa, IA 52577.

Night Crawler Hunt

Have you ever gone on a night hunt to find and collect nightcrawlers? Join us for an exciting adventure at White Oak Conservation Area! You can take your crawlers home to use as fishing bait or donate them to the hungry critters at the Environmental Learning Center. It’s sure to be a fun experience for all ages! Be sure to wear shoes that can get wet and dirty, and don't forget your flashlight.

OWLS Program "YMCA Drum Performance"

Adults of all ages are invited to join the O.W.L.S. (Older, Wiser, Livelier Souls) program! Come enjoy a fun, free performance by the YMCA Cardio Drummers, where the group will move and drum to simple rhythms using stability balls and sticks. It’s a lively and engaging experience for everyone!

NAMI Family Support Group

NAMI Family Support Group is for any adult with a loved one who has experienced symptoms of a mental health condition. This group meets on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month from 5 p.m.- 6 p.m. via Zoom and in person at the Optimae Building (209 E. Maple St) in Centerville.
