Knee-High Naturalists "Eat Like a Bird"

Bring your children ages 5 and younger out to the Environmental Learning Center on Wednesday, February 5th from 9-10 am for the monthly Knee-High Naturalist program. This FREE program is designed to help foster learning about nature and exploring the outdoors. We ask that adults bringing children remain with them during the program.

On February 5th, the program is titled "Eat Like a Bird". Kids will explore how birds eat with their beaks and how the beaks help birds eat certain foods. We will also have a fun game of eating like a bird with Fruit Loop cereal. If your child needs an alternate "bird food", please let us know.

American Legion Post 34 Steak Night

Join Post 34 for our monthly steak night!

We will be serving from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Choose from our very popular whole catfish or shrimp for $14 and our hand cut 12 oz. Ribeye for $20, each meal comes with salad, baked potato and bread.

The Mahaska Chamber & Development Group is hosting Coffee & Conversation, previously known as Eggs & Issues. Come out the Environmental Learning Center to watch "Leave it to Beavers" in the Discovery Lab. This is a documentary documentary film (FREE for all ages) about the fascinating story of beavers in North America.

The Mahaska County Conservation Board invites homeschool and online school families to the monthly Homeschool Science Lab on Wednesday, February 12th from 10:00-11:00 am at the Mahaska County Environmental Learning Center.

The topic for February will be "Push-Pull Rockets". Kids will become scientists as they explore push and pull forces with balloon rockets.

February's Painting at Smokey Row

Every month we travel to Smokey Row on the third Thursday to bring a fun painting event to the Oskaloosa area! Please join us for Februarys on the 20th. 
For the month of February we’ll be creating this beautiful wintery piece with a nod to this months Valentines holiday. Pair this with a yummy drink and you’ve got a perfect evening.

Each ticket is just 30$ a piece and the event starts at 6 pm. There are 2 ways to register/pay:
1. Venmo 30$ to That Paint & Pottery Place instructor: @Dora-Olson-2
2. Register at Smokey Row by filling out the sign up sheet and paying at the register with 30$ cash or check made out to That Paint & Pottery Place. (They have a special drop box just for payment for the paint classes behind the counter)

The Mahaska County Conservation invites adults of any age to the O.W.L.S. (Older, Wiser, Livelier Souls) program on Friday, February 21 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm for a guest presentation about "Life in the Arctic Circle".

Guest speaker, Ella Paulson, will talk about her experiences traveling abroad and spending time in Lapland. She has amazing stories about her studies and experiences in the arctic wild! Ella is a current Green Iowa AmeriCorps member serving Mahaska County Conservation.

Secondary Homeschool Art Class

This class introduces secondary homeschool students to a variety of 3-D techniques that serve as building blocks for a solid foundation in art making. As skills are acquired and improved upon, students will learn to think independently and solve problems creatively.

For students 13-18 years old.

Winter Concert Series - Haymakers

It's time to announce a winter concert!
The Haymakers will be here all the way from Wichita, Kansas. 

Haymakers takes the concept of the string band and plug it into a broad swath of acoustic music that stretches from Americana to bluegrass, from Appalachian folk music to bluesy western swing, and even into the realm of the jam band.

Dustin Arbuckle (vocals/harmonica), Tom Page (vocals/guitar), Anthony Trupia (mandolin/vocals), and Caleb Drummond (bass/vocals) lock into an array of grooves that go in and outside the box of traditional acoustic music. The Wichita, Kansas-based group formed in 2012 and gradually honed their sound through steady gigs around the Sunflower State before releasing their debut, self-titled album in 2017. Since then the band has toured steadily throughout the Midwest and beyond, playing everywhere from festivals to rowdy bars to living rooms. Over the years they have cultivated a loyal fanbase and developed a reputation for lively performances that blend a wide variety of original and traditional songs performed in their own unique style.

The Mahaska Chamber & Development Group is hosting Coffee & Conversation, previously known as Eggs & Issues. This weekend adventure helps couples find their true identity and develop fun and healthy ways to connect with their spouse. Participants will experience how knowing who they are can produce a joyful style of communication. They will learn new habits and practices as they speak from their heart.
