Coffee Club at the Environmental Learning Center

Join us at Mahaska County Conservation's monthly "Coffee Club at the ELC" on Friday, September 1st from 9:00-10:00 am. Homemade refreshments will be served along with freshly brewed coffee.

While at the Coffee Club, we have a great time visiting and learning about fascinating things about nature and MCCB. This month, you will learn about interesting facts about Monarch butterfly migration.

Bring your own coffee cup and fill it with our fresh, hot brewed coffee. Reservations are not needed - just stop in!

Afterwards, feel free to look around at the exhibits during your visit. There are many great displays to see in the ELC.

The Mahaska County Conservation Board invites homeschool and online school families to the monthly Homeschool Science Lab. 

The topic for September will be about "Monarach Butterflies" and kids will learn about butterfly life cycles and the migration of these amazing butterflies.

This program is free and reservations are needed to participate by August 31st.

OWLS Lunch & Learn "Cherokee Leaf Pounding"

The Mahaska County Conservation Board invites adults of any age to the O.W.L.S. (Older, Wiser, Livelier Souls) program for the topic of the month; "Cherokee Leaf Pounding."

Please let us know if you are coming. Reservations are made by contacting MCCB. 

"Cherokee Leaf Pounding". This is a technique in which a leaf is taped to fabric then hammered with a mallet until the chlorophyll creates a stain in the shape of that leaf. You will be able to make your own to take home! All supplies will be provided, but if you have your own hammer, please bring it!

Don't forget to bring a friend and a lunch!

Navy '83 Ride Across America

A group from the Naval Academy class of 1983 decided to ride across America to get to their 40th reunion to raise awareness and fundraiser for Veteran causes. 

The group is riding 3,423 miles over 113,059 feet of altitude stopping in 44 different cities, Oskaloosa being one of those! Each day they will start with 22 push ups to raise awareness for the suicide prevention resources available to service members. The riders will then bike 75 miles per day to the next city, where they will spend the night. 

Come out and join in on the push ups or just cheer the group on their biking journey of 3,423 miles from Whidbey Island, Washington to Annapolis, Maryland!

Costume and Canvas

Let’s get spooky! Join us for an afternoon of painting, with a bloody twist on Saturday, September 23rd at 2:00pm at Sassy Sunflower (2465 Northgate St, Ottumwa, IA 52501). Local artist Alex Batterson will lead attendees through the creation of their creepy canvas. Paints, easels, canvases, and brushes will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own brushes. The cost of the event is only $30 with proceeds going to Halloweenapalooza 2023. Food and “spirits” will be available for purchase. Youth Outdoor Field Day

Bring the kids and family to the 20th Annual Youth Outdoor Field Day at the Russell Wildlife Area. The Mahaska County Conservation Board and many other local conservation groups and businesses come together each year to put on the outdoor EVENT OF THE YEAR for your family!

Cost of the event is $5 per person (kids & adults). Kids get a free event t-shirt until the early bird deadline of Sept. 15th.

After 12 pm on Sept. 15 through the day of the event, the cost will be $10 per person and no event t-shirts for kids.

University Park Fall Festival 2023

We're Doing It AGAIN!
We enjoyed last year's inaugural Fall Festival so much we're doing it again! You are invited to the University Park Community Center and city park for lots of family-friendly fun.
Musical entertainment by The Boys.
Laser Alley is returning with bouncy houses and inflatables.
There will be a table with memories and the history of our city. Sign up for the bags tournament.
Grab a bite to eat and something to drink from the food trucks.
Bring a blanket or some lawn chairs and come enjoy the afternoon with friends and family.
