Mahaska County Conservation Board invites homeschool and online school families to the monthly Homeschool Science Lab. October is all about the spiders! 

Come learn some interesting facts about these web weavers and build your own spider web!

Breast Cancer Awareness Walk

Mahaska Health is hosting our annual Breast Cancer Awareness Walk around Oskaloosa City Square to bring awareness and show support to our community.

There will be a display of hundreds of pink flags, recognizing the number of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in Iowa each year.

The annual walk is hosted to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness and to honor those who have battled or are battling this diagnosis.

Knee High Naturalists "Creepy Crawlies"

Bring your children ages 5 and younger out to the Environmental Learning Center on Tuesday, October 17th from 9:30-10:30 am for the monthly Knee-High Naturalist program, "Creepy Crawlies." 

This FREE program is designed to help foster learning about nature and exploring the outdoors. We ask that adults bringing children remain with them during the program.

On October 17th, the program is titled "Creepy Crawlies!". Kids will learn about some interesting insects and spiders. We will have fun with some spider web building!

Leighton Lions Fall Pancake Disaster Benefit

On August 4th, 2023, Casey Brummel, son of John Brummel and grandson of Ruth and the late Mel Brummel of Leighton, and family lost their home and personal possessions in the epic and deadly wildfire that swept the city of Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii without warning. 

Freewill offerings accepted. 

Proceeds of this breakfast event are to go to Casey and his family towards the rebuilding of their home.

Halloween Bash at Eveland Access

Come out to Eveland Access Campground on Saturday, October 21st for a day of fun family activities. The event will kick off at 1:00 pm with a carnival and fun contests for for all ages.

Later in the afternoon everyone can listen to spooky stories and participate in a costume parade and trick-or-treating. Back by popular demand, a night time auto tour to see the lighted displays of all the campsites will be held from 7-9:00 pm. Anyone going through the auto tour will be able to vote for their favorite campsite! What fun!

Camping is available for $20.00 per night at first-come, first served basis. Campers are encouraged to decorate your campside (lighted Halloween theme) and hand out candy for trick-or-treaters.

Come-and-go reception to welcome the four musicians of Okaidja Afroso and celebrate the opening of Jennifer Drinkwater's "What's Good: Oskaloosa" art exhibit in the GDA lobby. Chat with the musicians and enjoy some beautiful oil paintings of beloved Oskaloosa landmarks. There'll even be a chance to make some art of your own! And if that's not good enough, what's better than chocolate? Did you know that Ghana is the second-largest producer of cocoa in the world? Samples of three different types of drinking chocolate made in Ghana will be available, along with a hot chocolate "dessert charcuterie" board.

Potluck n'Learn: Dinner and a Documentary

Join us at the Mahaska County Environmental Learning Center for dinner and a documentary! Bring your favorite soup or side to share, and learn about the ecological knowledge of the indigenous Ga-Dangme fishermen in Ghana. The 30-minute documentary, Jaku Mumor (Ancestral Spirit), by Ga-Dangme musician Okaidja Afroso, explores indigenous views on the element of Water, the sanctity of Fish, and the role of music, dance, and storytelling in cultures. Afroso hails from the GaDangme people of coastal Ghana. He and his band are visiting World Fest artists and will perform around Mahaska County the week of October 22-28. The film also deals with the challenges facing indigenous communities across the globe, such as the impact of rising seawater levels around fishing communities, as well as the effects economic development has on cultural preservation. His presentation gifts audiences with a fresh perspective of the GaDangme of West Africa, a viewpoint that highlights the abundance of the continent, not what it lacks. It pays respect to the wise ways of Afroso’s elders and ancestors and their reverence for and connection to the natural world. Please bring your own crockpots and servers (ladles, serving spoons, etc). If you can, bringing your own bowls and spoons would be wonderful! We'll have compostable one-use bowls and plates for those who aren't able to bring their own bowls and service, but we'd definitely appreciate people bringing reusables if that can work for them.

The Enchanted Trail will begin at S & A Auto – ending at Stephens Memorial Animal Shelter. There will be colorful characters along the route, along with candy and fun activities.
