Eveland Access Summerfest

The Eveland Access Summerfest event is hosted through the partnership between Mahaska County Conservation and the Muse Music Store.

We are excited to be gearing up for the 5th annual Eveland Access Summerfest on Saturday, June 1, 2024!

Together we provide an annual music festival held at the Eveland Access Campgrounds, located right next to the Des Moines River. You´ll find several music acts with different genres of music from noon-10 pm, great local food, bags and volleyball tournaments, and BINGO for everyone to enjoy.

Science Exploration Summer Fun Day Camp

In this day camp, youth will learn about different aspects of science and how it impacts our lives. Participants will get to play scientist as they put on their own experiments.

Mahaska County Farm to Table Dinner

ISU Mahaska County Extension and Outreach and Mahaska County Farm Bureau are again partnering to host the third annual Farm to Table dinner. This event highlights local farmers and embraces the importance of knowing where our food comes from. It is a great community event that is open to the public. It will be in Bradbury Hall at the Nelson Pioneer Farm on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.

Mahaska County 4-H Honor Council members are an important partner in this effort as well. This is a group of 8th - 12th grade 4-H members who provide leadership for 4-H activities, participate in community events, and provide community service throughout the county. The Honor Council uses this as a fundraiser to offset the costs of their community events.

Through this meal, we wish to highlight the wonderful products and talents of local producers. The Farm to Table meal with provide a connection between our local farmers and the community. Our menu will feature a full meal made up of ingredients sourced locally.

Tickets for the Farm to Table Dinner can be purchased at the link below. Tickets are $25.00 and include an appetizer, entree, dessert, and drink from locally sourced producers. 

We are still collecting donations to make this event and future Honor Council projects a success. To contribute, you can send or drop off a check to Mahaska County Extension and Outreach at 212 North I Street, Oskaloosa 52577. We are a 501C3.

The Iowa State Extension office is holding a story walk to promote both reading and exercise in children and adults. This years selected books are "Jack's Garden" by Henry Cole, to promote an intrest in flower gardening, and "The House Jack Built". Author Missi Goldson Book Signing

Children's author, Missi Goldson was born in Marshalltown and raised in the small rural community of Garwin. She graduated in 1991. Her parents, Robert and Dinny Nielsen, still live in Marshalltown.

She made the decision to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in 2000. She has lived in Memphis, Tennessee since 2006 and currently works at Second Presbyterian Church teaching preschool. She has a passion for sharing GOD’S LOVE with little ones and the Lord has blessed her with the ability to author her first book, number one new release on Amazon in children’s ministry. “My Five Finger Promise”— teaches the promises of God in a bright, colorful, simple rhyming style. It can also be taught as a finger-play that your children will easily remember!

She is a single mom to four wonderful children. Titus-22, Nehemiah-20, Magdalene-16, and Lazarus-14. THey also have a Chihuahua that they absolutely adore named Buddy!!

In her free time, she enjoys being outside in nature, all animals, exercising and cooking

B.A.R.K Rangers Kick-off Event

Mahaska County Conservation is starting a new program called B.A.R.K. Rangers, a program to encourage people to take their dogs on hikes in county parks. Our program is related to the National Park System’s B.A.R.K. Ranger program, but we are using county parks since Iowa does not have any national parks. Program participants can earn certificates by completing activities with their dog and they can even purchase special B.A.R.K. Ranger swag. We have special dog tags for participants to purchase!

To start the program, there will be a kick-off B.A.R.K. Ranger event at the Environmental Learning Center on Saturday, June 29 beginning at 10:30 am.

Bring your dog to learn about the B.A.R.K Ranger program coming to Mahaska County! 

• Learn all about the program and tips on hiking with your dog
• Earn a special B.A.R.K Ranger Certificate after participating in a park scavenger hunt

Handgun Safety Course

This course will serve as an introduction for new shooters and as a refresher for those experienced with handguns. By the end of the course, students will have a working knowledge of firearms safety, operation of the handgun including disassembly and maintenance, fundamentals of shooting, and drills to continue practicing and improving. 

Equipment for the student to bring:

• Serviceable handgun with magazines 
• Hearing protection
• Eye protection 
• Hat with brim (ballcap) 
• 150 rounds of ammunition

Other information:

• Must wear long pants
• Closed-toed shoes are required
• no low-cut tops are allowed
• bug spray, sunscreen, water, & snacks are recommended. 

Participants must sign a waiver to attend, and those under 18 years of age must have a parent or guardian sign. 

Class is limited to 10 participants. $129.00 fee.
