Knee-High Naturalists "Turtles"

Bring your children ages 5 and younger out to the Environmental Learning Center on Wednesday, September 4 from 9-10 am for the monthly Knee-High Naturalist program. This FREE program is designed to help foster learning about nature and exploring the outdoors. We ask that adults bringing children remain with them during the program.

On September 4th, the program is titled "Turtles".
Kids will learn how turtles are special animals called reptiles. We will have a craft, meet some live box turtles and watch a turtle race!

Microgreens Presentation

Microgreens; sometimes called vegetable confetti, are seedlings of specific vegetables, herbs and other plants.

They add color and nutrients to any dish you prepare. Many like to add microgreens to soups, stews, salads, sandwiches, main dishes, and use as garnishes.

Homeschool Science Lab "Pond Study"

The Mahaska County Conservation Board invites homeschool and online school families to the monthly Homeschool Science Lab on Wednesday, September 11 from 10:00-11:00 am at the Mahaska County Environmental Learning Center.

The topic for September will be a "Pond Study". We will take a short hike (stroller-friendly) to visit a small pond by the ELC. We will explore all stages of aquatic life that live in the water and mud.

The movie documentary showing on this day is "Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story". It is a story about love between about a man and wife, man and otter, and for the natural world. Through interactions of Molly's time with the Mail family, viewers will understand how animals - and the environment around us- heavily impact our lives.

Kelly Prickett, the new Regional Director & Director of Entrepreneurship and Economic Development Initiatives for the Indian Hills
Community College Iowa Small Business Development Center, brings over 13 years of experience in Tourism, Main Street, and
Chamber of Commerce roles to her position. With a passion for education and community development, Prickett advises
entrepreneurs and business owners across ten southern Iowa counties. She graduated in December, 2022 with Masters in Adult
and Higher Education (M. ED) and co-chair as Wish Coordinator for Southeast Iowa's Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Justin DeVore is the Director of Marketing, Communications, and Development at Oskaloosa Schools, and serves several non-profit orgs
in Oskaloosa. He is an award-winning communicator with over 11 years of experience in school communications and a diverse
background in nonprofit assistance, news coordination, and community development. Leveraging his expertise in website

September's Painting at Smokey Row

Every month we travel to Smokey Row on the third Thursday to bring a fun painting event to the Oskaloosa area! Please join us for September's on the 19th. 
For the month of September, we’ll be creating this gorgeous earthy fall piece full of whimsy and outdoorsy-hippie vibes. Pair this with a yummy drink and you’ve got a perfect evening.

Each ticket is just 30$ a piece and the event starts at 6 pm. There are 2 ways to register/pay:

Youth Outdoor Field Day

Bring the kids and family to the 21st annual Youth Outdoor Field Day on Saturday, September 28th any time between 8 am and 12:00 pm. The Mahaska County Conservation Board and many other local conservation groups and businesses come together each year to put on the outdoor EVENT OF THE YEAR for your family! This year, the event location has been moved to White Oak Conservation Area located 12 miles east of Oskaloosa.

COST is $5 per child (adults are free). This can be paid the day of the event! Cash or check to MCCB. No pre-registration is needed.
